Corylus Contorta

Description: Corylus ave 'contorta' is also known as the Corkscrew hazel or Harry Lauder's Walking Stick tree, is an attractive small tree or large shrub with heart shaped yellow foliage that appears in spring, turning green throughout the summer before buttery yellow again in the autumn. This twisted hazel is most popular for its contorted branches that twist and corkscrew in spirals providing year round interest but particularly in winter when the leaves do not disguise the interesting form. Long yellow catkins on bare branches, from winter to spring. An ideal choice for creating a wildlife garden attracting moths, butterflies and a variety of insects as well as birds and squirrels.

History:Discovered in about 1863 in a hedgerow at Frocester, in Gloucestershire. Received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit

Growing Tips:Will grow well in most soils, preferring a moist, well-drained site. For the best foliage colour, plant in full sun.
